Nauset Lighthouse, Massachusetts

Cape Spear Lighthouses, Cape Spear, Newfoundland











There are two lighthouses at Cape Spear, Newfoundland. Cape Spear, near the Newfoundland capital of St. John's, is the most Easterly point in Canada. The old lighthouse (left) became operational in 1836 and continued in operation until 1955 when the new lighthouse (right) was put into commission. My photos were taken in 1998.

Plum Island Lighthouse, Plum Island, New York




Located on Plum Island, New York off of Long Island, this lighthouse which resembles a schoolhouse can be seen from the New London to Long Island Ferry. This light was established in 1827 and rebuilt in 1870. It has been decommissioned since 1978. This photo was taken from the ferry in 2004.

Montauk Point Lighthouse, Long Island, New York




The Montauk Point Lighthouse is located at the Easternmost point of Long Island, New York in Montauk Point State Park. The light was the first lighthouse in New York State and is the fourth oldest active light in the U.S.A. It was constructed in 1796 and first lit in 1797. It has been automated since 1987. The light is owned and maintained by the Montauk Historical Society. My photo was taken in 2004.

Whitlock's Mill Lighthouse, Calis, Maine




Located near Calis, Maine, the Whitlock's Mill Lighthouse sits on the south side of the St. Croix River. It was built in 1910 replacing an earlier structure. The light was automated in 1969. This photo was taken in 2004.

Walton Harbour Lighthouse, Walton Harbour, Nova Scotia


This lighthouse is located in Walton Harbour, Nova Scotia on the Bay of Fundy. Originally commissioned in 1873, it was decommissioned in the 1970's. The municipality of East Haunt's purchased it and it was declared a heritage site in 1992. Photo was taken in 1998.

Fort Point Lighthouse, Liverpool, Nova Scotia


Located in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, this lighthouse was decommissioned in 1989. Originally established in 1855, the lighthouse was restored and the land around it developed as the Fort Point Lighthouse Museum Interpretive Park which opened in 1997. Photograph of this uniquely shaped lighthouse was taken in 1998.

Seal Island Light Museum, Seal Island, Nova Scotia


This lighthouse and museum is a replica of the Seal Island Lighthouse, Seal Island, Nova Scotia. It is located near Barrington, Nova Scotia and was built in 1978. The original lantern from the Seal Island Light was installed in the replica in 1978. Photo taken in 1998.

Gilberts Cove Lighthouse, Nova Scotia

This light is also know as Gilberts Point Lighthouse. It is located Southwest of Digby, Nova Scotia, overlooking Gilberts Cove and the Digby Spit. The lighthouse was established in 1904. The light was discontinued in 1984. The grounds and light were declared a Provincial Heritage Site in 1990 after being restored by the Gilberts Cove and District Historical Society. Peggy's Point Lighthouse, Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia


More commonly know as the Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, this light is located at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia near the entrance to St. Margaret's Bay. It is an extremely popular tourist attraction and has a post office in the tower. The tower is 50 feet tall and the current lighthouse was built in 1915 replacing a wooden structure that had been established in 1868. When I photographed the lighthouse in 1998, recovery operations for the Swissair 111 crash that killed 229 people were still underway, based in Peggy's Cove. The crash had occurred 5 miles offshore from Peggy's Point.

Cape Forchu Lighthouse, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia


This lighthouse is located at Yarmouth in Southwestern Nova Scotia. It sits at the entrance to Yarmouth Harbour and and overlooks the Gulf of Maine. The current light was built in 1961 and replaced a former wooden structure that had stood since 1839. Photo taken in 1998.

Shipwreck Point Lighthouse, PEI


This is one of the few concrete lighthouses on Prince Edward Island. It is located near Naufrage Harbour. This light was established in 1913. Photo was taken in 1998.

North Cape Lighthouse, PEI


This lighthouse is located on the far Northwestern tip of Prince Edward Island. It was established in 1866. Photo taken in 1998.

East Point Lighthouse, Souris, PEI


This light is located east of Souris, Prince Edward Island. It was built in 1867 and is one of the last manned lighthouses on the island. My photo was taken in 1998.

Wood Islands Harbour Lighthouse, PEI


This light is located in the Southeast of Prince Edward Island near the ferry dock for the ferry to Caribou, Nova Scotia. Photo taken in 1998.

West Point Lighthouse, PEI


Perhaps one of the most recognizable lighthouses in Prince Edward Island, with its distinctive black and white colour scheme, West Point Lighthouse is located on PEI shore on the Western Entrance to Northumberland Straight. It was established in 1875. The light is automated and the building now houses a gift shop, restaurant and accommodation. My photo was taken in 1998.

Prim Point Lighthouse, PEI


Prim Point Lighthouse near Belfast, Prince Edward Island is the oldest lighthouse on PEI. It is the only round and only brick lighthouse on the island.

North Rustico Harbour Lighthouse, PEI


This quaint lighthouse is located in North Rustico, Prince Edward Island. It is located near Cavendish, the land of Lucy Maude Montgomery and "Anne of Green Gables". My photo was taken in 1998.

Youghal Lighthouse, County Cork, Ireland


This lighthouse is in the South of Ireland in Youghal, County Cork, overlooking Youghal Bay. The photo was taken in May 2001.

Black Head Lighthouse, County Clare, Ireland


This lighthouse is located on the Burren in County Clare, Ireland. It is situated on a rugged headland overlooking the entrance to Galway Bay. Photo taken in May 2001.

Pointe Venus Lighthouse, Tahiti




The Pointe Venus Lighthouse is located on the northern tip of Tahiti in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. It was built in 1868 and was restored in 1963. It is reported to have been built by Thomas Stevenson, father of author Robert Louis Stevenson. My photo was taken during a trip to French Polynesia in 1991.

Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt




Known as one of the Wonders of the Ancient World the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria, Egypt was built in the 3rd Century B.C. on a small island in the harbour at Alexandria. It was estimated to have been between 380 - 490 feet in height, and was considered one of the first lighthouses in the world. The structure was destroyed in the 1300's A.D. The photo is of Fort Qaitbey which sits on what is believed to be the original site of the Pharos Lighthouse, and it is believed that some of the original stonework from the Pharos Lighthouse was used in the construction of the fort. East Quoddy Head Lighthouse, Campobello Island, New Brunswick


Also known as Head Harbour Light, the East Quoddy Head Lighthouse is situated at the Northern most point of Campobello Island, New Brunswick. It is painted with the unique pattern of the St. George Cross (red vertical and horizontal stripes). It is was established in 1829. Photo taken in 2004.

Mulholland Point Lighthouse, Campobello Island, New Brunswick


This light is located on the West side of Campobello Island, New Brunswick near the Franklin D. Roosevelt Bridge which links the island to the mainland (Lubec, Maine). It was built in 1885 and has been inactive since 1962. Photo taken in 2004.

Bayswater Lighthouse, New Brunswick




Bayswater Lighthouse is inactive and located on the Kingston Penninsula on the West Side of Milkish Inlet, Saint John River, New Brunswick. Photo at bottom taken in March 2008, two new photos added were taken March 2012.

Renforth Light, New Brunswick

Located on the Kennebecasis River in Renforth, New Brunswick, the Renforth Light is privately maintained and found in Renforth Rotary Park. Built in the 1980's, the light is active but unofficial. Photo taken in March 2008.

Lighthouse Point, Drew's Head Lighthouse, New Brunswick


Located near Beaver Harbour, New Brunswick the lighthouse at Lighthouse Point was built in 1984, however there has been a lightstation in this location since 1875. The photo was taken in March 2008.

Digby Wharf Light (Relocated), Saint John, New Brunswick


The Digby Wharf Light sits in Saint John Square in downtown Saint John, New Brunswick. It was relocated here from Digby, Nova Scotia and sits not far from the Saint John Harbour Light. Photo taken in March 2008.

Saint John Harbour Light, Saint John, New Brunswick



This light, built on the Canadian Coast Guard Base is decorative only and is not an aid to navigation. It is situated in downtown Saint John, New Brunswick on the harbour. Photo on left was taken in March 2008. Photo on right was taken March 2012.

Cape Spencer Lighthouse, New Brunswick



The Cape Spencer Light is located East of Saint John, New Brunswick on the Bay of Fundy. This photo was taken in March 2008.

Quaco Head Light, St. Martins, New Brunswick


The Quaco Head Light is located near St. Martins, New Brunswick, on the Bay of Fundy. This photo was taken in 2004.

Guvercin Adasi (Pigeon Island - Bird Island), Kusadasi, Turkey


This light is situated on a small island near the main harbour at Kusadasi, Turkey. The island is known as either Pigeon Island or Bird Island. Photo was taken in May 2008.

Kilauea Point Lighthouse, Kauai, Hawaii











This light is located at the Northernmost point of the Hawaiian Islands on the North Shore of the Island of Kauai. These photos were taken in November 2006. The light is now part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. The light began operation in 1913.

Nawiliwili Lighthouse, Kauai, Hawaii











This light is situated on Nini Point at the entrance to Nawiliwili Harbour on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai near the town of Lihue (on the Southeast corner of the Island). The current tower was built in 1932. Photo taken in November 2006.

Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, Mendocino, California











Photos were taken in August 2005. The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse is located North of Mendocino, California. It is a beautiful restored lighthouse is owned by California State Parks and was restored by the Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association. The lighthouse was originally constructed in 1908. The lightkeepers's house has also been restored and opened in 2006 as the Lighthouse Inn at Point Cabrillo.

Point Arena Lighthouse, Point Arena, California




This photo taken in August 2005 shows the majestic white tower of the Point Arena Lighthouse, just North of the town of Point Arena, California. The current tower began operation in 1907 replacing a previous light which had been in operation since 1870.

Battery Point Light, Crescent City, California




This light is situated on a small island adjacent to the harbour at Crescent City, California. The island can be reached on foot when the tide is low. It was first lit in 1856. It was automated in 1953 and is currently a museum operated by the Del Norte Historical Society. This photo was taken in July 2005.

Yaquina Head Light, Newport, Oregon




This light is located just north of Newport, Oregon. It was first lit in 1873 and replaced the Yaquina Bay Light to the south. This photo, taken in the late 1970's shows the light painted red and white. Currently it is black and white.

Umpqua River Light, Reedsport, Oregon






This light is located in the Umpqua River State Park just south of Reedsport, Oregon overlooking the Umpqua River. The current light was lit in 1894 when it replaced the original Umpqua River Light that was abandoned because of unstable ground in 1864. The light was changed to electric from oil in 1934. The light is still operational and automated. Top photo taken on a foggy morning in 2005.  Other photos taken in June 2012.
